What is small enough to fit in the palm of a person’s hand, weighs less than a paper plane, and can fly indefinitely when exposed to sunlight?

Meet CoulombFly here!

Chinese scientists have built CoulombFly, world’s smallest and lightest solar-powered ultralight micro aerial vehicle. The size and weight are now only 1/10 and 1/600 of the previous world’s smallest and lightest solar-powered aircrafts, respectively.

“My ultimate goal is to make a super tiny flying vehicle, about the size and weight of a mosquito, with a wingspan under 1 centimeter,” says Mingjing Qi, a professor of energy and power engineering at Beihang University in Beijing.

After further development, the new drone motor technology is expected to be applied in emergency rescue operations, narrow space detection and other similar scenarios.
