Italian activist Tommaso Bortolazzi, the captain of the Global Sumud Flotilla’s vessel Maria Cristin, embraced Islam while being detained by Israeli forces. The news of his conversion has spread widely, touching hearts across the Muslim world.
After his release and arrival in Istanbul, Bortolazzi shared details of his emotional experience. He explained that most of his companions during the mission were from Turkiye and were Muslims. Their unity and faith, even in the face of detention, left a deep impression on him.
He recalled that while in custody, Israeli police interrupted his companions’ prayers, a moment that profoundly affected him. Witnessing their calm and devotion in such circumstances made him reflect on the power and peace within their faith.
Moved by what he saw and felt, Bortolazzi said he decided to take a stand against the injustice he witnessed. Together with a close friend, he recited the Shahadah, the Islamic declaration of faith.
Describing the life-changing moment, he said that He felt the need to oppose this and, together with his friend, he recited the Shahadah, and like a newborn, he is very happy about it.
