In a surprising move, Dawn News has officially shut down its Urdu website and given the entire team a one-month notice before ending their contracts.
According to reports, the management said the decision was made because the Urdu site was not generating enough revenue to stay operational. Last month, internal discussions had already hinted that the website might close soon due to financial struggles.
Media experts say this is another example of how Pakistan’s media industry is facing a major decline. A few years ago, the industry was booming, but now many outlets are struggling to survive because of low ad revenue, rising costs, and tough competition from digital platforms.
Many journalists have expressed concern on social media, calling this a sad day for Urdu journalism and a sign that traditional media needs new strategies to stay relevant in the digital age.
