The Punjab government has announced that it will begin a strict, province-wide crackdown on littering from January 1. This action is part of a broader effort to improve cleanliness, public health, and overall environmental conditions across the province.
Under the new enforcement drive, throwing garbage in public places will be treated as a serious offence. People found violating the law may face heavy fines ranging from Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 500,000. In severe cases, offenders could also be sentenced to prison for a period of three to seven years, depending on the nature and impact of the violation.
Burning garbage has also been declared a punishable offence. Anyone caught burning waste may be fined up to Rs. 500,000 and could face up to three years in jail. Burning tires will be dealt with even more strictly, as it causes severe air pollution and health risks. Offenders involved in burning tires may face imprisonment of up to seven years.
The rules will apply to various forms of waste disposal. Throwing household or commercial waste on roads, empty plots, or public spaces will result in strict penalties. Dumping garbage into drains or sewerage systems, which often causes blockages and flooding, will also be fined heavily. Improper disposal of animal waste or remains has been included in the crackdown as well.
To ensure the law is properly enforced, the government will deploy dedicated monitoring teams across the province. These teams will oversee cleanliness in residential areas, markets, industrial zones, streets, and other public spaces. Their role will be to monitor violations, issue fines, and take legal action where necessary.
Officials have urged citizens and businesses to act responsibly and dispose of waste in designated areas only. The government believes that strict enforcement, along with public cooperation, will help create a cleaner, healthier, and safer environment for everyone.
