PIA to Resume Direct London Operations from March Next Year

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is planning to restart direct flights to London from March 2026 after receiving approval for four flights per week at Heathrow Airport. This step is seen as an important move in the airline’s efforts to rebuild its international network and strengthen its presence in the UK.

PIA resumed its UK operations in October this year after the British authorities lifted a five-year ban on Pakistani airlines. The ban had been imposed due to safety and regulatory concerns, and its removal marked a major milestone for Pakistan’s aviation sector.

The announcement comes soon after a major ownership change at PIA. The Arif Habib Consortium, along with its new partner Fauji Fertiliser, has acquired a 75 percent stake in the national airline. As part of the agreement, the consortium has committed to investing Rs125 billion to improve PIA’s overall operations, fleet condition, and passenger services.

The new owners have also shared plans to significantly expand the airline’s active fleet. PIA currently operates around 18 aircraft, but the consortium aims to increase this number to 62 aircraft in the coming years. This expansion is expected to help the airline improve flight frequency, open new routes, and reduce operational disruptions.

At present, the deal is awaiting final approvals from the Privatisation Commission and the federal cabinet. Once these approvals are granted, the contract will be formally signed, followed by financial closure. If all steps proceed as planned, the resumption of direct London flights and broader operational improvements could play a key role in PIA’s revival and long-term stability.
