LAHORE: Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique announced that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed with Pak Suzuki Company for the production of biofuel from offal.
He made this disclosure during a meeting held on Tuesday to explore the possibilities of local production of modern cleaning machinery used in Turkey. The meeting was attended by Punjab Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian, Special Secretary Arshad Baig, Suthra Punjab Authority DG Babar Sahib Din, and Additional Secretary Ahmer Sohail Kaifi.
The minister stated that 15 megawatts (MW) of electricity could be generated from generators at the Lakhoder landfill site in Lahore, with potential for gradual increases in production.
He instructed attendees to complete the study and prepare proposals by March. “The establishment of the Suthra Punjab Authority is a significant step toward transitioning to the waste-to-value phase,” he added.
The minister views the Suthra Punjab programme as an exemplary model of public-private partnership, noting that organic fertiliser will also be produced from waste through necessary garbage segregation. Additionally, he mentioned that small vacuum sweepers and tractor-towed sweepers will be manufactured locally, which will enhance the cleaning mechanisms and promote the economy.
The Punjab Local Government Secretary emphasised the need to expedite the transition process of the Suthra Punjab Authority, stating that cooperation from the private sector will be sought during the waste-to-value phase. He also mentioned that progress is being made rapidly toward obtaining carbon credits, with further advancements expected soon.
