A joyful Basant celebration in Lahore turned into tragedy when Suno TV reporter Zain Malik fell from a fourth-floor rooftop and died, as multiple accidents during the festival left over 100 injured and reignited debate over public safety and past bans on kite flying.

LAHORE: A night of kite flying and festivities turned tragic for Pakistan’s media community after Zain Malik, a young reporter associated with Suno TV, lost his life during Basant celebrations in Lahore.

According to initial reports, Malik fell from the fourth floor of a building while celebrating the festival and died at the scene. Friends and colleagues described him as a cheerful, lively, and dedicated journalist whose sudden death has left fellow reporters deeply shaken.

The incident occurred amid multiple safety concerns linked to this year’s Basant. Rescue officials say more than 100 people have been injured and at least six have died in separate kite-flying-related accidents across the city. The tragedy has revived memories of the ban imposed nearly 25 years ago when the festival was declared dangerous after repeated fatal incidents.

Despite recent security challenges in the country, including major incidents in Quetta, Balochistan, and a deadly attack in Islamabad, celebrations continued in many areas of Lahore. Authorities had suggested some events would remain low profile, yet festivities carried on with full enthusiasm in several neighborhoods.

Malik’s death has intensified debate about public safety during large gatherings and festive activities. Journalists across Pakistan expressed grief on social media, offering prayers and urging stronger safety measures during Basant.

His family is expected to announce funeral arrangements soon. Colleagues remembered Zain Malik as a warm-hearted professional whose passion for reporting and friendly nature made him widely admired in the media fraternity.
