Shoaib Maqsood Wants Babar Azam as Opener for Pakistan Team

Pakistani cricketer Sohaib Maqsood has proposed a reshuffle in Pakistan’s batting order, suggesting that Babar Azam should take up the role of opening the innings instead of Saim Ayub. Maqsood pointed to Ayub’s recent struggles in major tournaments, including the World Cups and the Asia Cup, where he has failed to consistently convert starts into impactful performances. He emphasized that high-pressure events demand experienced and dependable players at the top of the order, particularly when early wickets can significantly disrupt a team’s momentum.

According to Maqsood, Babar Azam’s class, composure, and ability to control the pace of an innings make him an ideal choice to open, especially in conditions like those in Sri Lanka. He noted that matches there often produce moderate totals in the range of 160 to 170 runs, where careful planning and smart batting in the powerplay can make a decisive difference. Maqsood believes Babar could anchor the innings while also accelerating when required, maximizing Pakistan’s overall total. At the same time, he recommended moving Saim Ayub to the No. 3 position, where he could play with more freedom and less pressure. He also highlighted Ayub’s bowling abilities, suggesting that his all-round skills could add valuable balance to the side if utilized effectively in the middle order.
