SECP clarifies ‘misreported’ data on dissolution of foreign companies

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) on Monday stated that certain media reports had inaccurately interpreted data regarding ceased foreign companies available on its website, saying the reports did not reflect the factual position, particularly with regard to the year of cessation.

In a statement, the regulator said the list published on its website specified the year of cessation against each company’s name to ensure transparency and accuracy of information.

The SECP said only 19 foreign companies ceased operations in Pakistan during 2022–2025, while 79 new foreign companies were registered during the same period.

It further clarified that the figure of 125 foreign companies, cited in some media reports, represented the total number of companies that had ceased operations since 1977 to date, and did not pertain to the last three years alone.

Additionally, the commission said foreign investment was recorded in 82 local companies in the last month alone. These investments originated from multiple jurisdictions, including China, the United States, Australia, Turkey, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Denmark, Germany, Malaysia, South Korea and Spain.

As of February 2026, a total of 1,157 foreign companies remain registered with the SECP, reflecting sustained foreign business presence and continued confidence in Pakistan’s regulatory environment, according to the statement.
