Luxury Overload? Punjab Govt Plans to Purchase Nee Land Cruisers, Haval SUVs for Beaurucrats

The Punjab government’s recent vehicle procurement plan has drawn widespread criticism after details revealed a massive Rs 1.14 billion allocation for luxury cars intended for bureaucrats, officials, and VIP security. The plan encompasses a range of high-end vehicles, including Land Cruiser and Haval SUVs, as well as Altis and Yaris sedans. In addition, bulletproof vehicles are being purchased for ministers and security personnel tasked with VIP protection.

Critics have argued that this lavish spending comes at a time when public services in the province are already facing budgetary constraints. Many observers say that such purchases prioritize the comfort and convenience of the elite over the needs of ordinary citizens, raising questions about fiscal priorities and governance.

Further scrutiny has been directed toward the allocation of Rs 530 million for the Chief Minister Inspection Team (CMIT), which includes pickups, sedans, and motorcycles. Analysts and civic observers have questioned both the timing and scale of these expenditures, highlighting concerns over transparency, accountability, and the responsible use of public funds.

While the government maintains that these purchases are necessary to ensure efficient operations and security for officials, public sentiment remains skeptical, particularly given the province’s pressing infrastructural and social service needs.
