Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has completed the first phase of Pakistan’s 5G spectrum auction, raising about $507 million for the government.

According to the regulator, around 597.2 MHz of spectrum was offered during the auction. Out of this, nearly 480 MHz was sold to major telecom operators operating in Pakistan. The newly allocated spectrum will help telecom companies expand network capacity and prepare their infrastructure for 5G services.

Three major telecom companies secured most of the available spectrum. Zong, Ufone, and Jazz were the main participants in the auction.

Most of the spectrum in the 2300 MHz and 2600 MHz bands was sold, while the majority of lots in the 3500 MHz band also found buyers. The telecom authority stated that the additional spectrum will increase overall mobile network capacity and improve data speeds for users.

Officials say the new spectrum will increase Pakistan’s overall spectrum availability by around 1.7 percent. This is expected to support the gradual rollout of 5G services, improve mobile broadband quality, and help meet the growing demand for faster internet across the country.
