Punjab Govt Launches “Drone Shield” Amid Rising Security Thre@ts

The Government of Punjab has introduced the “Drone Shield” initiative as part of a broader effort to enhance security measures across all districts of the province. The program was approved by Maryam Nawaz in March 2026 and represents a significant step toward addressing emerging aerial security challenges.

Under this initiative, specialized anti-drone units will be deployed and equipped with advanced jamming technology, including systems such as the EMG-150 gun. These tools are designed to detect, disrupt, and neutralize unauthorized or potentially hostile drones within a radius of approximately 2 to 3 kilometers. The move comes in response to increasing concerns over the misuse of drones for surveillance and other unlawful activities.

The program places particular emphasis on safeguarding critical infrastructure, sensitive installations, and foreign nationals residing or working in the province. In addition to counter-drone capabilities, surveillance drones will also be utilized by authorities to enhance monitoring and enable proactive responses to potential threats.

As part of the security framework, the use of civilian drones has been restricted under Section 144, while law enforcement agencies will continue to operate without these limitations. This initiative highlights the government’s shift toward adopting modern, technology-driven approaches to ensure public safety and maintain security in the face of evolving risks.
