Pakistani Banks Under Firefor Charging Rs. 3.40 Per SMS to Customers

Pakistani banks are facing growing scrutiny over the sharp increase in SMS alert charges, with customers now being billed around Rs. 3.40 per message compared to just 42 paisa in 2021. The significant hike has raised concerns among lawmakers, who question the justification behind such a steep rise in costs for a basic service. Many customers rely on these alerts for transaction updates and account security, making the charges a widespread financial burden when accumulated over time.

During recent discussions, members of the Senate Finance Committee expressed serious reservations, pointing out that banks are collectively generating billions of rupees through SMS fees, while telecom companies are reportedly receiving substantial payments as well. The committee has called for detailed data covering a full year of SMS-related charges to examine whether customers are being overcharged.

While banks argue that these fees help cover operational costs, including security notifications and transaction alerts, telecom providers maintain that SMS services fall within their standard business offerings. Senators have emphasized that the actual cost of sending an SMS is estimated to be only 1 to 2 paisa, urging greater transparency, accountability, and a fair pricing structure to safeguard consumers from excessive and unjustified charges.
