The Punjab Home Department has launched a paid internship program for students studying psychology, criminology, and law. This program will take place in 44 jails across the province.

The main goal of this internship is to involve students in the correctional system. They will have the opportunity to hold sessions with inmates, which will help in the rehabilitation and reintegration of these inmates back into society.

This hands-on experience will allow students to apply their knowledge in real-world situations and contribute positively to the lives of the inmates.

Moreover, the internship program will also provide free legal assistance to vulnerable groups such as women, children, and the elderly. This support aims to potentially reduce their sentences by offering them the legal help they need but might not afford.

The initiative was announced by Punjab Home Secretary Noor ul Amin Mengal during a meeting with IG Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir. During the meeting, Mengal highlighted the importance of the program in improving the correctional system and providing valuable experience to students.

He emphasized that this program not only benefits the inmates by aiding their rehabilitation but also offers a unique learning opportunity for the students involved.

By working directly with the inmates, students will gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals in the prison system. They will learn how to provide psychological support, understand the complexities of criminology, and offer legal assistance where needed.

This initiative reflects the Punjab Home Department’s commitment to enhancing the correctional system and supporting educational development. It shows a proactive approach in bridging the gap between academic learning and practical application, aiming for a positive impact on both the inmates and the students.
