Zindagi withdraws ‘Barzakh’ from YouTube Pakistan

The web series will be withdrawn from the platform effective August 9 in response to current public sentiment

Zindagi and Team Barzakh have announced the voluntary withdrawal of their show Barzakh from YouTube Pakistan, effective August 9, 2024.

This decision comes in light of the current public sentiment in Pakistan, demonstrating the team’s commitment to respecting their audience’s preferences and avoiding alienation.

“We, at Zindagi and Team Barzakh, extend our heartfelt gratitude to our global audience for their unwavering support for Barzakh – a show that was created to bring people together everywhere. But in light of the current public sentiment in Pakistan, we have made the decision to voluntarily withdraw Barzakh from YouTube Pakistan, effective 9 August 2024. This decision underscores our dedication to honouring our audiences without causing alienation,” the statement read.

Barzakh, a web series written and directed by Pakistani filmmaker Asim Abbasi, has recently come under criticism, particularly on social media.

Many have accused the series of promoting homosexuality. The show features the return of popular actors Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed to the TV screen after 12 years, portraying step-siblings.

While the first and second episodes of Barzakh were well-received by fans in both India and Pakistan, the third episode sparked outrage among Pakistani viewers due to its controversial content. This episode includes romantic scenes between two male characters and addresses themes such as indecency, adultery, and the indoctrination of children.

Pakistani viewers have criticised the story, makers, and cast of Barzakh, claiming the series violates Islamic principles and accusing director Asim Abbasi of promoting homosexuality. In contrast, Indian fans did not take issue with the content.

In response to the backlash, a boycott campaign against the series has been launched by Pakistani fans, targeting not only the director but also stars Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed.

The announcement of the show’s withdrawal has sparked various reactions from fans and viewers. While some express disappointment over the show’s removal, others appreciate the team’s sensitivity to public sentiment.

Zindagi and Team Barzakh concluded their statement by expressing sincere gratitude for their audience’s understanding and continued support. “We sincerely appreciate your understanding and continued support. Thank You,” they said.

As Barzakh prepares to exit YouTube Pakistan, the global audience can continue to view the show on other platforms.
