More than 6,000 Prisoners Released in Punjab After Completing Education in Last 5 Years

In Punjab, more than 6,000 prisoners have been released over the last five years after completing their education. This information comes from a spokesperson for the Punjab Interior Department, who expressed disappointment about the lack of meetings for the Education Remission Committee.

The committee is essential because it is responsible for meeting monthly to discuss and approve the early release of educated inmates. Recently, a letter was sent to the relevant officials pointing out that the committee has not met for the past two months.

This delay is impacting the timely release of prisoners who have worked hard to complete their studies while in jail.

The Education Remission Committee usually awards sentence reductions to prisoners who achieve educational milestones, such as completing their matriculation, intermediate, bachelor’s, or master’s degrees.

Additionally, prisoners who memorize or translate the Quran can receive significant sentence reductions ranging from six months to two years. Those who undergo vocational training can also benefit, receiving a one-month reduction in their sentences.

It is important for the committee to resume its meetings to ensure that these educational accomplishments are recognized and rewarded. This would not only encourage inmates to pursue their studies but also help them reintegrate into society as educated individuals ready to contribute positively.
