Toyota’s Flying Taxi Completes Its First Flight in Japan

Toyota Motor Corporation and Joby Aviation, Inc., a company creating electric air taxis for commercial passenger travel, recently celebrated an important milestone with the successful completion of Joby’s first international demonstration flight. The flight took place at Toyota’s Higashi-Fuji Technical Center in Shizuoka, Japan, with the iconic Mount Fuji as a scenic backdrop. This event marked a significant step forward in their shared vision for quiet, emissions-free travel in the skies.

The demonstration showcased the low noise impact of Joby’s electric aircraft, reflecting years of collaboration between the two companies. Since the partnership began nearly seven years ago, Toyota has provided its extensive expertise in automotive manufacturing and advanced technology to support Joby’s development efforts. Toyota’s engineers have been working closely with Joby’s team in California to contribute their knowledge to the project, and their commitment to Joby’s success was further reinforced this year. In 2023, Toyota entered a long-term agreement to supply essential components for Joby’s aircraft production, including powertrain and actuation parts that will help bring the electric air taxis to life.

Joby’s founder and CEO, JoeBen Bevirt, expressed his excitement about the partnership and their joint progress toward clean, efficient air travel for everyday use. “This first international flight is an important milestone as we work toward our goal of bringing quiet, clean air travel to cities around the world,” said Bevirt. “We are honored to share in Toyota’s vision for the future of mobility and grateful for the opportunity to demonstrate that vision in Japan.”

This international flight marks a major advancement in Joby and Toyota’s shared mission to create sustainable, efficient travel solutions for the future, leveraging both companies’ strengths to make the vision of electric air taxis a reality.
