After India refused to travel to Pakistan for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to security concerns, the International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced a Hybrid Model to resolve the issue. Under this arrangement, Pakistan will remain the official host of the tournament, but India’s matches, including any knockout games if they qualify, will be held in Dubai.

This compromise allows the tournament to proceed without further disputes between the cricket boards of the two countries. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) agreed to the Hybrid Model after receiving assurances from the ICC that similar arrangements would be used for future tournaments hosted by India. Additionally, the PCB was granted hosting rights for an ICC Women’s event after 2027, marking a step forward for women’s cricket in Pakistan.

While the resolution has ensured that the Champions Trophy will go ahead as planned, it has also sparked criticism within Pakistan’s cricketing community. Former cricketers and analysts have voiced their dissatisfaction with the PCB’s handling of the situation. Among the most vocal critics is former captain Basit Ali, who argued that the PCB settled for inadequate compensation. He described the allocation of the Women’s World Cup as a “lollipop,” suggesting that Pakistan deserved to host more prominent events, such as the Asia Cup or other major ICC tournaments.

This internal backlash highlights ongoing tensions within Pakistan cricket, as many feel the board missed an opportunity to assert itself more strongly on the international stage. Critics believe the PCB should have negotiated for greater benefits, especially given Pakistan’s strong position as a cricketing nation and the significance of hosting rights for the Champions Trophy.

Despite the controversy, the Hybrid Model ensures that the 2025 Champions Trophy will be hosted successfully, maintaining the spirit of international competition. However, the debate over the PCB’s decision-making reflects broader concerns about how the board manages Pakistan’s interests in global cricket. For now, the focus shifts to delivering a memorable tournament while addressing the concerns of fans and former players alike.
