The federal government has unveiled plans to launch a 100 MW solar power project in Gilgit-Baltistan, aiming to strengthen the region’s energy infrastructure and promote the use of renewable energy. This initiative is part of the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) and the Prime Minister’s Special Package, reflecting the government’s commitment to sustainable development and clean energy solutions.

The project is strategically distributed across four key locations within Gilgit-Baltistan. Gilgit will receive 40 MW of solar capacity, while Skardu, Chilas, and Ghanche will each benefit from 20 MW. This distribution ensures that multiple areas in the region gain access to renewable energy, which will help address the challenges of electricity shortages and dependence on non-renewable sources.

The feasibility study for the project will be conducted by the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK), a leading firm in infrastructure planning and development. The study is set to evaluate technical, environmental, and economic aspects of the project, ensuring that it is designed and implemented effectively. The government aims to complete this critical phase by February 2025, after which tenders will be issued in April 2025 to move forward with construction.

The Gilgit-Baltistan government is fully financing the solar power project, highlighting their dedication to improving the region’s power supply and fostering economic growth. This initiative aligns with broader national efforts to combat climate change by reducing reliance on fossil fuels and increasing the share of clean energy in the country’s power mix.

Once operational, this solar project is expected to provide significant relief to the region’s energy challenges, improving the quality of life for residents and supporting local industries. It will also contribute to Pakistan’s larger vision of transitioning to sustainable energy and meeting international climate action commitments.

By investing in renewable energy projects like this, the government is not only addressing immediate energy needs but also laying the groundwork for a greener and more sustainable future for Pakistan.
