First Donkey Meatpacking Plant Begins Operations in Gwadar for Export to China

Pakistan has opened its first donkey meat processing plant in Gwadar to meet China’s growing demand for donkey meat, bones, and hides. These products are mainly used in making e-jiao, a traditional Chinese medicine.

According to officials from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, a Chinese company has started operations at the plant. This marks an important step in developing this unique export industry. Instead of exporting live donkeys, authorities believe it is more practical to process and export their meat and other parts.

The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Food Security confirmed that Pakistan’s donkey population has reached 5.9 million. With the necessary protocols now finalized, exports to China can officially begin.

This move is expected to benefit both countries. For Pakistan, it creates a new source of income and employment opportunities. For China, it ensures a stable supply of donkey-derived products for traditional medicine.

The project also highlights Pakistan’s growing interest in non-traditional exports. By setting up proper facilities and meeting international standards, the country aims to increase its presence in this niche market.

As the industry expands, officials will monitor regulations and ethical concerns to ensure smooth operations. The Gwadar plant’s success could pave the way for similar projects in other regions.

With growing demand and a structured export system, Pakistan’s donkey meat industry may become a key part of its trade with China.
