Rawalpindi Declares Emergency as Water Shortage Threatens

Rawalpindi is facing a serious water crisis due to ongoing drought conditions. The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has declared an emergency as water supply falls short of demand.

The city needs 68 million gallons of water daily, but only 51 million gallons are available. The situation is expected to worsen since the Meteorological Department predicts very little rain in February and March. Groundwater levels have dropped significantly, reaching 700 feet, making it even harder to access water.

Due to these challenges, WASA is urging residents to use water wisely and avoid waste. Strict actions, including fines, are being imposed on those found wasting water. The agency has also announced that water supply from Khanpur Dam will be temporarily halted until February 22 for cleaning purposes.

To manage the crisis, WASA is working on solutions like rationing water, monitoring illegal connections, and encouraging people to adopt water-saving practices. Officials warn that if conservation measures are not taken seriously, the shortage could become even more severe in the coming weeks.

Residents are advised to reduce water usage, fix leaks, and avoid excessive use of water for washing vehicles and watering lawns. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and may introduce further restrictions if necessary.

WASA continues to appeal for public cooperation to prevent the crisis from worsening and ensure that Rawalpindi has enough water for essential needs.
