Bangladesh Removes Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s Image from Currency Notes

Bangladesh has released a new series of banknotes that no longer feature the image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the country’s founding leader. This is the first time since the country gained independence that no human portrait appears on the currency.

Instead of political figures, the new notes highlight Bangladesh’s cultural beauty and natural landmarks — including temples, monuments, and scenic landscapes. According to Bangladesh Bank, the updated design aims to reflect the nation’s heritage and natural identity, rather than focusing on individual leaders.

This step follows a major political shift in the country. The government of Sheikh Hasina, daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was recently removed from power. The Awami League party has also been banned, marking a significant turn in the country’s politics. Many experts believe the new currency design is a sign of this political change and a break from the past.

So far, three out of nine denominations have been launched under the new design. The rest are expected to be introduced gradually. The old banknotes will still be accepted and remain legal for use.

This new look of Bangladesh’s money is more than just a design change, it represents a fresh chapter in the country’s history. It shifts the focus from political personalities to the collective culture and identity of the nation.
