Electric Vehicles to Get Cheaper in Pakistan with New Rs. 9 Billion Subsidy Plan

The Sharif-led government has launched the National Electric Vehicle (NEV) Policy, introducing a Rs. 9 billion subsidy to promote eco-friendly transportation across Pakistan. This initiative will support the purchase of 116,000 electric bikes and 3,100 electric rickshaws.

To make the process smooth and transparent, a fully digital platform will be used. Applicants will be able to register and track their applications online, ensuring fair distribution and easy access for everyone.

The overall NEV policy includes more than Rs100 billion in total subsidies. Importantly, 25 percent of these subsidies are reserved for women, encouraging greater female participation in green mobility and making the program more inclusive.

In addition, the government plans to introduce a NEV Adoption Levy on petrol and diesel vehicles. The goal is to gradually reduce the public’s reliance on fuel-based transport and shift preferences toward electric vehicles, which are cleaner and more cost-effective in the long run.

This move comes as part of Pakistan’s efforts to reduce air pollution, lower fuel imports, and embrace sustainable development. The scheme is expected to benefit a wide range of people, including students, delivery riders, and daily commuters, especially in major cities.

By encouraging electric vehicle use and offering direct support, the government aims to make clean mobility more accessible and affordable. The NEV Policy marks a significant step forward in building a greener, smarter transportation system for Pakistan’s future.
