Charo Henríquez promoted to deputy Washington editor at The New York Times

Charo Henríquez has been promoted to deputy Washington editor at The New York Times, bringing nearly 30 years of digital journalism expertise and leadership to shape editorial strategy and newsroom operations.

LAHORE, August 4, 2025 — Charo Henríquez has been promoted to deputy Washington editor, strategy and operations, at The New York Times, marking a significant milestone in her nearly three-decade career at the intersection of journalism and technology.

Henríquez, a renowned digital media executive, brings proven expertise in emerging platforms, editorial strategy, newsroom workflows, and coaching journalists to grow and engage audiences. Fully bilingual and an accomplished public speaker, she has emerged as a leading voice in shaping the future of digital journalism.

Team MediaBites’ first encounter with Charo was during ONA2024 in Atlanta, where she captivated the audience as she took the reins of the Online News Association (ONA) during the awards ceremony. While a planned interview couldn’t materialize due to her packed schedule, her insights and leadership left a lasting impression.

For the past nine years, she has contributed to The New York Times in various strategic positions.

Her academic achievements include degrees from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, a B.A. in Communications from Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, and a J.D. in Law from Universidad de Puerto Rico.

MediaBites extends heartfelt congratulations to Charo Henríquez on her well-deserved promotion and wishes her continued success. We look forward to securing an in-depth interview on the evolving U.S. media landscape during ONA25 in New Orleans.
