Pakistan’s First Electric Train Takes Test Run in Lahore

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif supervised the test run of Pakistan’s first electric urban train, known as the Super Autonomous Rapid Transit (SART), in Lahore. The trial journey covered the route from Ali Town to Muslim Town, marking a major step toward modern and eco-friendly transportation in the country.

The SART train has been built by Norinco, a Chinese company. It features three coaches and can carry up to 320 passengers at a time. Powered entirely by electricity, the train can travel up to 40 kilometers on a single charge, making it both efficient and environmentally friendly.

Officials say this new transport system will help reduce pollution and provide a faster, more comfortable travel option for city residents. The electric train is part of a larger initiative to modernize public transport in Punjab, especially in big cities like Lahore.

During the trial run, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expressed pride in the project, calling it a milestone for Pakistan’s urban development. She added that more clean and modern transport systems will be introduced to improve travel for the public.

The project reflects the government’s commitment to green energy, reduced carbon emissions, and improved public services. Once fully launched, the SART electric train is expected to ease traffic, reduce travel times, and offer a better commuting experience.

The successful test run has raised hopes for more electric transport solutions across the province and beyond, as Punjab moves toward a cleaner and smarter future.
