Pakistan to Shift Gwadar Port on Solar Power

Pakistan is taking a major step toward solving Gwadar’s energy crisis by introducing solar power under a new government initiative.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, recently announced that solar-based solutions will be developed to address Gwadar’s long-standing issues of electricity shortages and water supply.

For years, Gwadar has struggled with an unreliable power supply, which has directly affected industries, residents, and key facilities in the port city. To overcome this, the government has set up a special sub-committee that will design solar energy systems, storage solutions, and distribution networks.

The goal is to provide Gwadar with a steady and affordable source of clean energy, reducing the city’s dependence on external sources and costly fuel imports.

As part of the plan, solar energy will be used to power some of Gwadar’s most important facilities. These include the desalination plant that supplies fresh water to residents, large water pumps that maintain the city’s supply system, factories located in the Gwadar Free Zone, and the newly developed Gwadar International Airport.

Ensuring uninterrupted energy for these facilities is seen as a key step toward supporting Gwadar’s growth as a major trade and economic hub.

This move reflects Pakistan’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development. By turning to solar, the government hopes to cut operational costs, improve the quality of life for Gwadar’s residents, and create a stronger foundation for future investments. If successful, this project could become a model for other regions facing similar challenges.
