Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has unveiled a Rs. 26 billion development project to completely rebuild Gujrat’s sewerage and drainage system, which she described as the “worst in Punjab.”
For years, residents of the city have faced serious problems after every spell of heavy rain, including flooded streets, submerged neighborhoods, and stagnant pools of sewage that make daily life unbearable.
Speaking about the issue, Maryam Nawaz criticized past governments for neglecting Gujrat’s needs and focusing instead on their own political interests. She said that citizens had been left to suffer without even a basic system to manage sewage and drainage, a service that every city should have.
The new project is being described as a fresh start for Gujrat, as it will include the installation of the first properly designed and planned sewerage network in the city. This will involve building the system from scratch, ensuring modern infrastructure that can handle both sewage disposal and rainwater drainage.
Although the construction will take time and is expected to cause temporary inconvenience, many residents are optimistic about the initiative.
Locals see it as a long-overdue step toward solving a problem that has affected their health, safety, and overall quality of life for decades.
