Chenab River Embankment Breaks at Gujranwala to Protect Sialkot and Wazirabad from Floods

To protect major cities from rising floodwaters, the Pakistan Army, working with local authorities, carried out a controlled demolition of river embankments along the Chenab near Gujranwala.

The step was taken to reduce water pressure and prevent large-scale flooding in Sialkot and Wazirabad, which were facing serious risk as river levels continued to rise dangerously.

Officials confirmed that people living in nearby villages were safely evacuated before the operation began. Residents were moved to designated shelters to ensure no lives were put in danger during the process.

While the decision means that some rural areas, farmland, and smaller settlements may be flooded, authorities stressed that the action was necessary to protect thousands of homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure in urban centers. By diverting the water, the flood threat to densely populated areas has been significantly reduced.

Relief operations are already in motion. Camps have been set up for displaced families, while heavy machinery and rescue boats are stationed in flood-prone areas. Food, drinking water, and medical supplies are being distributed as officials continue to monitor the situation closely.

The move highlights the difficult choices faced during natural disasters, where protecting larger populations sometimes requires sacrificing farmland and rural property. Authorities said they remain committed to helping affected villagers recover once the water levels subside.

For now, the focus remains on ensuring safety, minimizing losses, and keeping floodwaters under control. Officials have urged citizens to remain cautious and follow evacuation instructions to avoid unnecessary risks.
