The Chief Minister of Punjab has announced strict new measures to curb child marriage under the recently promulgated Punjab Child Marriage Restraint Ordinance 2026. The updated law aims to strengthen child protection and ensure stronger enforcement against those involved in underage marriages across the province.
Under the new ordinance, the minimum legal age for marriage has been set at 18 years for both boys and girls, removing any previous ambiguity. Any adult who contracts marriage with a minor can face imprisonment ranging from two to three years, along with a fine of up to Rs. 500,000. The law also holds accountable parents, guardians, clerics, or any individuals who facilitate, arrange, or promote child marriages, making them liable for legal action and penalties.
In a significant step, the ordinance further declares that cohabitation resulting from a child marriage will be treated as child abuse. Such offenses carry stricter punishment, including imprisonment from five to seven years and fines starting at Rs. 1,000,000. Authorities have clarified that all offenses under this law are cognizable, non-bailable, and non-compoundable, meaning police can take immediate action without prior court approval, and cases cannot be withdrawn through private settlements. The government states that these provisions are designed to ensure swift justice, deter violations, and provide stronger protection for children’s rights.
