Brussels, May 21, 2025 — In a landmark move for European journalism, Deirdre Veldon, Managing Director of The Irish Times Group, has been appointed as the new President of News Media Europe. The announcement came during the organisation’s General Assembly held in Brussels today.

Veldon succeeds Victoria Svanberg of Sweden’s NWT Media Group, who is credited with strengthening the unified voice of Europe’s independent media during a period of rapid technological and political upheaval.

With nearly 30 years of experience in editorial leadership and strategic media transformation, Veldon brings a clear, future-forward vision to her new role. Her presidency is expected to steer News Media Europe through challenges such as the dominance of digital platforms, political interference, and shifting audience behaviours.

“I’m delighted to step into this role at a really important time for the news industry,” Veldon said. “Independent journalism must navigate changing audience needs, embrace new technologies, and fight for its business survival—all while facing growing political and platform pressure. News Media Europe is a vital advocate, and I look forward to driving meaningful progress.”

Wout van Wijk, Executive Director of News Media Europe, praised Svanberg’s tenure and expressed strong confidence in Veldon’s leadership:

“Deirdre Veldon’s experience and commitment to journalism make her a formidable leader for the road ahead. Her passion and vision will be invaluable as we continue advocating for a vibrant, pluralistic media landscape across Europe.”

Veldon, who has played a key role in The Irish Times’ digital and editorial strategy, also serves as Vice-Chair of NewsBrands Ireland. She is widely respected for championing sustainable journalism and reader engagement.
