Fitrana Rules! Who Must Pay Sadaqat al-Fitr?

As Ramadan comes to an end, Muslims around the world are preparing for Eidul Fitr, a time of joy, gratitude, and togetherness. Along with the celebrations, there is an important charitable duty called Fitrana, or Sadaqat al-Fitr, which must be given before the Eid prayer. This charity helps those in need and allows everyone to take part in the festivities.

Fitrana is a small but meaningful donation that every eligible Muslim must give. It is meant to purify one’s fast by making up for any mistakes during Ramadan. The amount is based on the cost of essential food items like wheat, barley, dates, or their monetary equivalent. This ensures that the less fortunate can celebrate Eid with dignity.

Every Muslim who has wealth beyond their basic needs is required to pay Fitrana. This obligation extends to men, women, and children, regardless of age. Parents are responsible for giving Fitrana on behalf of their children, including newborns. It is a reminder that charity and kindness should be a part of every Muslim’s life, regardless of their financial status.

Fitrana is given to those who struggle to meet their daily needs. This includes people living in extreme poverty, orphans, widows, and those burdened by debt. Travelers who are stranded or facing hardships are also eligible to receive Fitrana. The goal is to ensure that everyone can experience the happiness of Eid, without financial worries.

In Pakistan, the minimum Fitrana amount for 2025 has been set at Rs240 per person, based on wheat prices. Those who wish to give more can do so by paying according to the cost of barley, dates, or raisins. Giving Fitrana on time is a way to spread kindness and make Eid a joyful occasion for all.
