The government of Pakistan has decided to eliminate 17,101 positions within the Ministry of Railways as part of its efforts to reduce costs and improve efficiency. This decision was made during a cabinet committee meeting on right-sizing, which was led by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.

During the meeting, it was reported that 29 ministries had confirmed the cancellation of 11,877 positions, along with the removal of 4,660 “dying” or redundant posts. Among these, Pakistan Railways took a significant step by cutting a large number of jobs. According to railway officials, out of 95,859 total positions, 17,101 have already been eliminated. Additionally, there are plans to reduce another 15,000 jobs in the near future as part of ongoing reforms.

The aim of these job cuts is to improve the operational performance of Pakistan Railways and to modernize its systems. By focusing on efficiency and cost-saving measures, the government hopes to make the railway sector more sustainable and better equipped to meet modern transportation needs. However, these changes highlight the challenges of balancing cost reduction with the potential social impact of job losses.
