The Directorate General of Immigration and Passports, operating under the Interior Ministry of Pakistan, has announced revised fees for Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) along with updated guidelines for passport applications. The new structure aims to simplify the process for international travelers and ensure greater transparency in services.

All Pakistani nationals who meet the eligibility criteria can now apply for MRPs with either five-year or ten-year validity. The passports are available in three booklet sizes — 36, 72, and 100 pages — catering to the needs of both frequent and occasional travelers.

Application Options: In-Person and Online

There are two ways to apply for a passport in Pakistan:

  1. In-Person Application:
Mandatory for first-time applicants. Citizens must visit the nearest Regional Passport Office (RPO) to complete biometric verification, submit required documents, and pay the applicable fee.
  2. Online Application:
This option is only available for passport renewals. Applicants can use the official online portal to submit their requests and pay the updated fee, which includes an additional online service charge.

Authorities emphasize that the online system is designed to save time and reduce in-person queues, especially benefiting overseas Pakistanis and those with prior travel documents.

  • Online services are only applicable for renewals and are currently not available for new applicants.
  • Citizens are encouraged to check the official website or contact their nearest passport office for any clarifications regarding documentation, eligibility, or processing times.

The government’s move to clarify the process and revise the fee structure reflects ongoing efforts to modernize public services and facilitate easier access to international travel documentation.
