Dubai Criminal Court sentenced a cleaner at a Dubai hotel to three months in jail to be followed by deportation on charges of stealing Dhs11,000 from the suitcase of a Gulf visitor.
The case dates back to October last year when a Gulf visitor reported to the police that Dhs11,000 had been stolen from his suitcase. He explained that he came with his wife to Dubai for tourism and stayed in a hotel in Bur Dubai.
He went out with his wife for a walk, leaving his belongings and a suitcase containing money inside his room, he said, adding that upon his return to the hotel, he discovered that the money was missing, so he informed the hotel management and the police accordingly.
A policeman stated in the interrogations that a team of detectives checked the surveillance cameras in the hotel corridors and the recordings showed that the cleaner took advantage of his access to the rooms of hotel guests to clean them and stole the money.
On interrogation, the defendant admitted that he entered the room to clean it but when he saw the bag, he opened it and stole Dhs11,000 from it.
