- Hunter Biden has been indicted on charges over his purchase of a firearm in 2018.
- The indictment comes after Biden’s plea deal with the feds related to two tax charges fell through in late July.
- The indictment alleges Biden lied about not using narcotics when he bought the gun.
Hunter Biden was indicted Thursday on three charges related to making false statements in the purchase of a firearm.
The indictment alleges that Biden — President Joe Biden’s son — lied when he said he didn’t use narcotics before buying the gun, a Colt Cobra revolver.
Two of the charges carry a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, according to the indictment. The less serious charge carries a maximum of 5 years of incarceration.
The indictment comes after Biden’s plea deal with federal prosecutors on misdemeanor tax charges fell apart in court in late July. The younger Biden had planned to plead guilty to two tax crimes, but the deal collapsed after prosecutors and defense lawyers were unable to agree on the scope of the agreement.
During the plea hearing in Delaware federal court, US District Judge Maryellen Noreika, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, asked Leo Wise, a top prosecutor in the case, whether the deal would mean Biden would get immunity for other possible crimes, according to the New York Times.
Wise said the plea deal wouldn’t cover other potential crimes. At that point, according to the Times, Biden’s lawyer said the plea agreement was “null and void.”
