IPL Steals Another International Player From PSL at Lower Price

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) has encountered another challenge as Quetta Gladiators’ overseas fast bowler, Spencer Johnson, has moved to the Indian Premier League (IPL), creating concerns over player availability for the upcoming season.

Johnson, who was originally signed by Quetta Gladiators for a reported Rs. 5.6 crore, was released from the team due to injury and ongoing rehabilitation concerns. Soon after, Chennai Super Kings signed him as a replacement for Nathan Ellis, securing his services at a lower price of INR 1.5 crore (approximately Rs. 4.5–4.66 crore). This development effectively rules Johnson out of participation in PSL 11, leaving Quetta Gladiators without one of their key overseas pacers.

This is not the first instance of overseas players shifting focus to the IPL despite PSL commitments. Similar situations, such as Blessing Muzarabani joining Kolkata Knight Riders while still contracted with Islamabad United, have highlighted challenges in player retention and scheduling conflicts. Such transfers have prompted PSL officials to issue warnings about strict measures against breaches of player contracts, emphasizing the league’s commitment to ensuring that franchises are able to field their full squads.

The incident underscores the growing competition between global T20 leagues and the challenges faced by PSL in retaining international talent amid lucrative opportunities in other tournaments. As the league continues to develop its brand and attract top talent, balancing contractual obligations and players’ professional choices remains a critical issue for organizers.
