Jordan Refuses to Play Basketball Match Against Isr@el in Solidarity with G@za

During the FIBA U-19 Basketball World Cup held in Switzerland, the Jordanian basketball team chose not to play its scheduled match against Israel. The decision was made as a show of support for the people of Gaza, reflecting Jordan’s stance on the ongoing conflict in the region.

The Jordan Basketball Federation officially informed FIBA, the international basketball governing body, that it would not participate in the match. The federation said the move was based on the current situation in Gaza and was a matter of principle.

Following the refusal, FIBA awarded the match to Israel by default, as per tournament rules. In response, the Israeli Basketball Federation expressed disappointment, stating that sports should unite people and remain separate from political issues.

Jordan’s action quickly gained international attention. Many saw it as a symbolic protest against the violence in Gaza, drawing support from those who believe in using peaceful platforms to raise awareness.

This incident adds to a growing list of countries and athletes who have taken similar steps to highlight humanitarian concerns through international sports events. While it cost Jordan the game, supporters of the move say it sent a strong message of solidarity.

The FIBA U-19 tournament continues, but Jordan’s decision has sparked conversations about the role of politics in sports and how athletes and federations can use their platforms to stand up for causes they believe in.
