KARACHI: A two-day international event on oilseeds and edible oil started here on Friday, gathering a large number of experts, industrialists and traders from within and outside the country, mainly from Malaysia, Indonesia, Canada and the United States.
The event was divided into parts: Pakistan Oilseeds Summit and Pakistan Edible Oil Conference, starting with the Oilseeds Summit. It is 8th PEOC and 5th Oilseeds Summit.
Rashid Janmohammad, CEO of Pakistan Edible Oil Conference (PEOC) and Chairman PEORA praised US Consulate in Karachi, US Embassy in Islamabad and the Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan Tarik Ali Khan for promoting edible oil trade with Pakistan.
He explained that earlier Pakistan Oilseeds Summit and PEOC were being organised separately. But the operators in these sectors came to a unanimous view that since these two are the two sides of one coin and are very much interlinked, it would be more viable to deliberate upon them simultaneously.
He said this two-day international event (Summit and Conference) will have strong impact globally.
Nawab Shahzad Ali Khan, Patron-in-Chief of Pakistan Edible Oil Refiners Association (PEORA) said that Pakistan is a big market for edible oil, diaries and cold drinks. It has a 250 million population which is fast-growing.
Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan, Tarik Ali Khan emphasized the need for quality, reliability and sustainability in the oil trade. He said that canola is the real success story in Canada, replacing many edible oils. Canadians see Pakistan as a potential market and trust dealing with Pakistan. Despite geo-political situation, Pakistan government is trying its best to expand trade with Canada, he said.
The High Commissioner said that Canada has advanced technology in oil and dairies sectors, and Pakistan can benefit. “Geographically, two countries are far, but have very close in people-to-people contact.
Other speakers included Executive Director, Asian Pacific Agriculture and Food Office of Canada, Diedrah Kelly, Industrialist Development Leader, Manitoba Agriculture of Canada Mr. Grant Carlson, CEO of US Soybean Export Council, Jim Suttar.
A panel discussion was held on US Soy Producer Perspective. It was moderated by Kevin Roepke, the Executive Director, Middle East, North Africa and South Asia, US Soybean Export Council. The panellists included Scott Gaffner, USSEC Secretary, Tim Bardole, USSEC Board Director and Phil Ramsey, Director ASA.
Presentations were also given by Troy Sherman, Senior Director, Government and Industry Relations, Canola Council of Canada, Francisco Magnaso, Global Head of Soybean, Louis Dreyfus Company, Eqan Ali Khan, CEO, FAP Marine Terminals Limited.
