The first day of the Islamic month of Muharram—and the start of the new Islamic year 1447 Hijri—is expected to be on June 27, 2025, if the moon is seen on the evening of June 26.

According to SUPARCO, the birth of the new moon is likely to happen on the afternoon of June 25. This means that by the next evening, June 26, the moon will be about 28 hours old. SUPARCO said this is enough time for the moon to become visible in the sky.

They also explained that the time between sunset and moonset in coastal areas of Pakistan will be around 75 minutes, which is considered ideal for spotting the moon. This makes it highly likely that the new moon of Muharram will be seen without much difficulty.

If the moon is sighted on June 26, then the Islamic new year will officially begin on Friday, June 27, 2025.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is one of the most sacred months for Muslims around the world. The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, holds special religious importance, especially for commemorating historical Islamic events.

Every year, the sighting of the moon is an important event for Muslims, as it determines the beginning of each new month in the lunar calendar. With favorable conditions expected this year, many are looking forward to starting the new year on June 27.
