The National Assembly has approved the PECA Amendment Bill, 2025, to regulate social media in Pakistan. The bill, presented by Federal Minister Rana Tanveer, focuses on protecting users’ rights and ensuring accountability on digital platforms.

A new authority will be established under this law to monitor social media platforms. This authority will have the power to register platforms, take action against those breaking the rules, and remove illegal or harmful content. It aims to make social media safer and more responsible.

The authority will consist of nine members, including key officials like the Chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and the Chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA). Additionally, experienced journalists will also be part of the team to ensure balanced representation.

The bill is the result of ongoing discussions within the government to strengthen control over digital content. By introducing these changes, the government aims to create a system that holds social media platforms accountable for the content shared on their platforms.

Supporters of the bill believe it will help address issues like online harassment, hate speech, and misinformation. However, some critics have raised concerns about possible misuse of the law to limit freedom of expression.

The PECA Amendment Bill is a major step toward regulating the rapidly growing digital space in Pakistan. It aims to strike a balance between protecting users’ rights and ensuring that social media platforms operate responsibly within the country.
