“No Guarantee of Handshake in India-Pakistan Women’s Match”, BCCI Secretary

The upcoming Women’s World Cup clash between India and Pakistan in Colombo has already gained attention, not just for the cricket but also for what may or may not happen off the field.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has clarified that while the game will be played under the official rules of cricket, there is “no guarantee” that players from both teams will exchange handshakes.

Saikia explained that all required protocols, as laid down by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) laws, will be followed during the match. This includes standard practices such as respecting the umpires’ decisions and observing the spirit of the game.

However, optional gestures like handshakes or hugs are not part of mandatory cricket laws. According to him, whether such gestures take place depends entirely on the teams and the situation.

Relations between the two neighboring countries have remained tense, which often extends to the cricket field. India and Pakistan women’s teams usually meet only at international tournaments or neutral venues.

Because of the political backdrop, emotions often run high, and every little detail from the toss to the final handshake comes under the spotlight.

Fans from both sides are eagerly waiting to see the teams face off, as matches between the two nations are always highly competitive and closely followed. While the spotlight will remain on the cricketing action in Colombo, the question of sportsmanship gestures like a handshake may also draw public interest.

For now, one thing is certain: the players will follow the rules of the game, but the rest is left to the spirit of the moment.
