The Federal Government of Pakistan has announced a major $1 billion investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) through the Ministry of IT and Telecommunication. This ambitious plan aims to build a strong national AI ecosystem and position Pakistan as a key player in the global technology race by 2030.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced during the inaugural Indus AI Week in Islamabad. In the first phase, the government will focus on developing core digital infrastructure, especially high-performance computing power and Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). These powerful facilities will be made available to businesses, startups, researchers, and universities to support AI development and innovation.
The investment will help accelerate research, improve government services, and boost AI adoption across important sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, finance, and manufacturing.
The plan also includes training one million professionals in AI skills and offering 1,000 fully funded PhD scholarships in artificial intelligence. This will help build a skilled workforce and strengthen Pakistan’s research capabilities.
The Ministry of IT and Telecom, along with the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), will lead the initiative in close partnership with the private sector. Industry leaders have welcomed the move and pledged their support.
This $1 billion commitment is seen as a game-changer for Pakistan’s digital economy. It is expected to create new jobs, increase IT exports, and drive long-term economic growth.
Experts believe that the successful implementation of this plan could bring a new era of technological progress in the country.
