Pakistan Customs has foiled an attempt to smuggle nearly 80 kilograms of silver jewellery through the International Mail Office (IMO) at Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) said on Tuesday.

According to the FBR, the Customs team detected 79.18 kilograms of silver jewellery, valued at around Rs66.9 million, hidden inside three international parcels declared as “ornaments/fashion ornaments.” The consignments had originated from Hong Kong and were addressed to a recipient in Rawalpindi.

Officials said the silver was intercepted during a detailed inspection of incoming parcels under the Customs’ enhanced scrutiny measures. The goods were seized in accordance with the law before they could be delivered to the consignee.

The FBR noted that the recent surge in global silver prices has led to a rise in smuggling attempts across Pakistan. However, this interception marks the first major silver seizure of its kind at the International Mail Office, both in terms of volume and value.

Customs intensify crackdown as silver smuggling surges amid global price hike

Reaffirming its commitment to curbing illicit trade, the FBR said Pakistan Customs will continue to maintain strict vigilance against all forms of smuggling, including those attempted through postal and courier networks, to protect the national economy.
