The Met Department has published a detailed report on the 2024 monsoon season, highlighting record rainfall and notable temperature changes across Pakistan.

From July 1 to August 30, the country saw 51% more rainfall than average, with some regions experiencing unprecedented downpours while others faced above-normal temperatures.

Balochistan and Sindh reported the highest increases in rainfall, with 111% and 108% more precipitation, respectively. Punjab experienced a 48% rise, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan had smaller increases of 5% and 2%. In contrast, Azad Jammu and Kashmir recorded a 21% decrease in rainfall.

Lahore was particularly affected, receiving 951.1 mm of rain this season. Notably, August 1 marked a historic single-day rainfall record of 337 mm in the city. This unusual weather pattern has raised concerns about potential flooding and its impact on agriculture and infrastructure in affected areas.

The report emphasizes the need for preparedness and effective management to address the challenges posed by these extreme weather conditions.
