Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta, who serves as the Co-Director of the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health, was honored with the prestigious 2024 Nils Rosén von Rosenstein Medal. The award ceremony took place on April 1 in Uppsala, Sweden. This respected international award was given to Dr. Bhutta in recognition of his outstanding work in improving children’s health and development across the world. It celebrates his lifelong dedication to medical research and his strong efforts to promote better healthcare for children in many countries.

Over the years, Dr. Bhutta has made major contributions to the field of paediatrics, which is the branch of medicine that deals with the health of infants, children, and adolescents. His work has helped shape important global health policies, especially in areas where children face serious health challenges due to poverty, lack of access to healthcare, and poor living conditions.

At the award ceremony, Dr. Bhutta also gave a powerful and thoughtful lecture. He spoke about the close relationship between the health of women and the health of their children. According to him, a mother’s well-being plays a key role in the health and survival of her child. He highlighted how many families around the world still struggle to get proper medical care and support. He pointed out that inequality in healthcare is a major problem in many parts of the world, especially in low-income regions.

Dr. Bhutta also talked about solutions and strategies that can make a real difference. He emphasized the importance of investing in early childhood development, supporting maternal health programs, and improving healthcare systems so they are accessible to everyone, no matter where they live. His message was clear: to improve global child health, we must also focus on caring for and empowering mothers.

This award and Dr. Bhutta’s achievements are a source of pride and inspiration for many. His work continues to influence public health efforts and guide the next generation of doctors, researchers, and policymakers working to create a healthier future for children everywhere.
