The Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has decided to allow students who have completed their pre-medical FSc (Intermediate) to pursue BS Engineering programs. These students will first need to complete an eight-week intensive course to cover fundamental subjects like mathematics, which are essential for engineering studies.

This change comes in response to a significant drop in engineering admissions, with some universities even closing their engineering departments due to a decrease of 10,000 admissions in just one year.

Dr. Nasir Mahmood Khan, Registrar of PEC, highlighted the critical role of engineering in the nation’s development and stressed the need to encourage more students to enter the field.

Under the new guidelines, universities will be required to implement this condensed preparatory program for pre-medical students before they can enroll in engineering programs. Additionally, universities must reserve 40% of their engineering seats specifically for these students.

This initiative is part of broader educational reforms aimed at addressing the declining interest in engineering among students who initially pursued pre-medical studies.
