The PEMRA Awards Cable TV Licenses process has reached a major milestone as 42 licenses were granted to 20 companies across 37 districts. The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) confirmed that only those companies that met the eligibility standards received licenses during a special ceremony held at PEMRA headquarters in Islamabad.
Chairman Muhammad Saleem welcomed the new license holders and encouraged them to provide accurate information. And quality entertainment while following PEMRA regulations. He also stressed fairness and positive contributions as they launch their networks.
This is the first time PEMRA has issued district-level cable TV licenses. Applications were invited in February 2025 through national newspapers, PEMRA’s website, and broadcast platforms. A total of 91 applications from 36 companies were submitted nationwide. Out of 29 companies that initially qualified for 67 licenses. And only those completing the required documentation were awarded licenses at the ceremony.
Auctions were conducted in nine districts including Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Sialkot, Abbottabad, and Mianwali. In 44 districts where fewer companies applied, offer letters were issued directly. To encourage greater participation, PEMRA has already announced the second phase of licensing with the application deadline extended by 20 days.
The move marks an important shift as the PEMRA Awards Cable TV Licenses initiative strengthens local media networks. With district-level licensing in place, the industry is expected to grow while ensuring accountability and transparency under PEMRA regulations.
