Portugal and Germany Likely to Recognize Palestine as a State

Portugal and Germany have added their voices to the growing number of countries that are planning to recognize Palestine as an independent state.

Portugal’s Foreign Minister, Paulo Rangel, announced that his country is preparing to officially recognize Palestine as early as next month. He emphasized that this decision reflects Portugal’s own independent foreign policy and is not influenced by any external pressures.

Meanwhile, Germany has issued a strong warning, saying it may have no choice but to recognize Palestine if peace talks aimed at achieving a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine do not resume soon. German officials stressed that continued delays in negotiations could leave them with no alternative.

These statements come after similar signals from other major countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Malta, who have also shown support for recognizing Palestine.

In addition, France and 14 other nations recently signed a declaration known as the “New York Call” during a meeting at the United Nations. This declaration calls on the global community to take action and officially recognize Palestine as a sovereign state, in the hopes of bringing lasting peace to the Middle East.
