Lahore is planning to improve its traffic system with a new smart traffic management project. The Traffic Engineering & Transport Planning Agency (TEPA) will install smart traffic signals and pedestrian (pelican) crossings at 20 busy intersections across the city. The project has been approved by the Punjab Cabinet.

The main goal of this initiative is to reduce traffic congestion, make roads safer for pedestrians, and improve the overall flow of vehicles. The new system will use modern technology such as real-time vehicle detection, cameras, and sensors. These tools will help traffic signals adjust automatically based on traffic volume, instead of following fixed timings.

The smart traffic system will be connected with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority and traffic police. This will allow centralized monitoring and better control of traffic conditions from one place. Authorities will be able to respond more quickly to traffic issues, accidents, or heavy congestion.

To improve pedestrian safety, LED-lit zebra crossings will also be installed. These crossings will be more visible, especially at night and during poor weather conditions, making it safer for people to cross busy roads.

This project follows the successful trial of smart traffic signals on Mall Road. After positive results from the pilot, the government has decided to expand the system to other key areas of Lahore. The initiative is seen as an important step toward making Lahore a smarter, safer, and more efficient city for both drivers and pedestrians.
