PTA has proposed a new policy stating that prepaid mobile balance should remain valid for the entire active life of a SIM card. This means that as long as a SIM is active, the unused balance should not expire.
The proposal is designed to protect consumers, especially since about 97 percent of mobile users in Pakistan rely on prepaid services.
PTA explained that prepaid balance is advance payment made by customers, and therefore it should not be removed or expire without being used. The authority believes that this change will help ensure fairness and protect the financial rights of millions of users.
Under the proposed policy, if a SIM card is temporarily blocked and later reactivated, the remaining balance should either be restored or refunded to the customer. However, this process would be subject to proper verification to prevent misuse or fraud.
PTA has invited public feedback on the proposal until March 16, 2026. Consumers, telecom companies, and other stakeholders are encouraged to share their suggestions and opinions before the policy is finalized.
The authority aims to introduce a fair and uniform system across all telecom operators in Pakistan. The goal is to increase transparency, improve consumer trust, and strengthen user rights within the country’s telecommunications sector.
